About the Artist and the Art
Whether working in a planned or spontaneous manner, for commissions or in the moment of inspiration and everything in-between, in her studio or en-plein-air, Patty Pendleton makes her compositions, and resultant color schemes, boldly evocative, or hinting at mystery and meaning, within the marks on paper or canvas, all culminating in a transformation of the everyday into stories full of color and life.
Patty will add text or commentary, or some type of narrative or conceptual titles to her works where image alone is insufficient to create the totality of the viewer experience.
Any mystery that remains, lies wrapped up in a secret manner within brush strokes or layers of color and form, or composition, which allows one to ponder and wonder, and deconstruct the images for oneself, resulting in unique and personal interpretations of the work.
Patty's paintings range from serious, insightful and brilliant portrayals of the environment around us to outright hilarious observations of our world experiences.
Patty's passion for painting is stylistically eclectic and yet her artwork remains true to her own visionary style and mastery of techniques and materials. She is inspired by everything around her, by myriad media, literature, existing art, nature and people, and she explores methods of putting those media and inspirations to the canvas, paper or any other substrate. Patty's painting may be categorized as stylized, or even conceptual or expressionistic, falling within both realism and naturalism, and often exhibiting a beautifully insightful naïve quality.
Being mindful of art throughout history, Patty pays homage to other artists' work and re-interprets or includes within her original works a bold hint of famous artworks or styles and genres while, in her inimitable fashion, she refashions them all into recognizable, original Patty Pendleton paintings.
There is something to please everyone within the vast body of Patty Pendleton's work: still lifes, landscapes and seascapes, portraits of people and animals, abstracts, architecture, fishing life inspired by local industry, and thematic art. As one might expect, there are many avid collectors of her art, both locally and abroad.
Patty opened Crow On My Shoulder Art Gallery next to her home on Deer Island, New Brunswick Canada a few years ago and is now represented online through her website https://www.pattypendleton.art
Works of art may be viewed and/or purchased online or at the gallery.
Artist's Statement
Pen and ink, brilliant pastels, textured acrylics, water colours, and pencils, among other media, are all utilized to create Patty Pendleton's dreamlike, sometimes zany imagery of landscapes, people and places, animals, still lifes, cartoons, and more. Patty's creations are fascinating, colourful and contain varied narratives and humour. Her subject matter is eclectic and interpreted by her curiously inventive vision.
"I see humour in everything. I like plays on words and word associations but with the extension of pictures to complete my commentary on our world and a celebration of what we find delightful in it. Everything interests me. Everything is entertaining.
"I love colour. I dress in colours. I want colours all around me. They don't have to match; all designs or styles can be piled one on top of the other; this is what my work is like…an abundance of the creation and re-creation of everything in our world…stories about ourselves and our environment.
"I am never bored. When I am involved in the creative process, I am completely immersed in it."
Patty Pendleton is a prolific artist. Born in San Jose, California, her family connections brought her to Deer Island where she met her husband and where she lives and makes art.
